The Burger Mistakes You Need to Avoid

Author name

Hamburgers are an interesting food. Even though they have German origins, they’ve been a staple dish in American cuisine for decades. Here are a few facts for you to read while you wait for your cheeseburgers in Jersey City:

1. With Liberty Sandwiches and Justice for All

During World War I, the American government tried to downplay hamburger’s connection to Germany by labeling it a “liberty sandwich”. The idea was to use the burger to stir up patriotic feelings, but the name didn’t last very long.

2. Where’s the Beef?

Easy answer: in the hamburgers. Most of the beef served in American restaurants goes into the patties used in hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Steaks may have bigger portions, but burgers are eaten more frequently.

3. Home of the Hamburger

Many American cities have been vying for decades to be the Home of the Hamburger. Some notable examples include:
Seymour, WI, where the state legislature decided to give the city this title through a decree

-Tulsa, OK, which calls itself “The Real Birthplace of the Hamburger”

-Hamburg, NY

-Athens, TX

-New Haven, CT

4. Michigan’s Monster Burger

If you think a quarter pound burger in Jersey City can too be heavy, read this:

A Detroit establishment called Mallie’s Sports Bar and Grill earned its place in the Guinness World Records for selling the largest commercially available hamburger. Buying the burger requires a 3-day notice and the ability to operate a forklift.

It consists of a 2000-pound patty that’s cooked down to 1174 pounds in a custom-made oven. It’s served in a 250-pound bun along with 300 pounds of pickles, onion, cheese, and lettuce. With a final weight of 1800 pounds, the record-setting burger is still on the Mallie’s menu and has a price tag of $10,000.

5. Sin City’s Expensive Burger

The most expensive regular-sized burger in the world was one of the many attractions in Las Vegas. Before it closed in 2014, Fleur de Lys in Mandalay Bay was home to a $5,000 burger called the Fleur5000.
The current record holder is a Dutch diner called De Daltons, where the Golden Boy burger is available for almost $6,000—and boasts Wagyu beef, beluga caviar, white truffles, and Iberico ham.
